Halloween is the one of the oldest celebrations we have. It is second in popularity only to Christmas in the United States. Today it is seen as a time for fun, family, and friends. But, at one time Halloween was a time of fear and dread.
Halloween origin dates back thousands of years to the Celtic festival known as Samhain. November 1 was the start of their new year - the end of summer and harvest, the beginning of winter and coldness.

On October 31, the Celts believed the ghosts of all the dead would return and mingle with the living. They believed the souls of those who had died while the year traveled into the afterworld on that day.
People gathered to reduce fruits, vegetables, and animals. Bonfires were lit in honor of the dead. The huge fires were also expected to help the dead on their journey and to keep the dead away from the living. The Celts believed that on that day all types of beings were at large including witches, ghosts, and demons. All beings that were part of the dark and terrifying afterworld.
Wearing costumes can be traced back to this Celtic duration when it was notion that the souls of the dead were out and around, along with fairies, witches, and demons. Offerings of food and drink were left out to placate them. People began dressing like these fearful beings, performing antics in transfer for food and drink. They wore animal skins draped on their backs, with masks to cover their faces to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.
Young and old alike continue to celebrate this holiday and dress up in costumes to go trick-or-treating or to attend a group gathering. Today we call this convention a party. To the ancient Gaels, it was the festival of the dead. To this day, witches, ghosts, and skeleton figures of the dead are still among the beloved costumes.
It is easy to see the roots of Halloween origin derived from the ancient festival and how contemporary traditions are undoubtedly based on the ancient fears of death and evil spirits.
